Plans to restore one of London's most recognisable landmarks have been given the go-ahead today 22nd december 2010 by the city's mayor, Boris Johnson.

Battersea Power Station, permission granted. This iconic building, the largest brick building in Europe, will see its restoration and will be put in use after nearly 30 years. It has been out of use since 1983. The permission for its restoration was given by Wandsworth Council's Planning Application Committee.

A major redevelopment of this London’s great landmark will represent not only saving one of the City’s important spots but also creating of a new exciting place in this part of south London. What will be great about this?

From the long term perspective Battersea Power Station is to generate more than 15,000 new jobs and approximately 3400 new homes, and, will attract investments in projects that will regenerate the wider area of Nine Elms across its 40-acre site. To ease the access to and from the area and as condition of approval Northern Line will be extended, from Kennington, and two new stations built on it. Real Estate Opportunities plc.will put approximately £200m into this major project. Other transport improvements will include new bus routes and a new passenger pier to link Nine Elms with central London using river bus services. Furthermore, a pedestrian high street and town square are also part of the plan. Space has been set aside to allow building of plenty of new facilities as restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and offices. A hotel and a cinema will not be forgotten either. To secure the safe structure of the building the work in its early stages will commence with restoration of its four chimneys. This part of the project should be finished by 2016.

The aspirations of the owners for Battersea Power Station are to turn it into London's cultural hub. It is expected to attract leading creative industries, exhibitions and, universities to use all sorts of the newly created facilities.
